On this module, you'll gain an introduction to the English Legal System, covering:

  • sources of law
  • precedent
  • approaches to statutory interpretation
  • the impact of the Human Rights Act 1998 on the legal system.

You'll also develop foundational legal, academic and transferable skills, including:

  • legal research
  • reading cases and statutes
  • voice work for legal practice.

You'll be equipped with the essential skills to progress in your law degree and future legal career.

Module learning outcomes

  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the structure of the English Legal System, sources of law, precedent, different approaches to statutory interpretation and the impact of the Human Rights Act 1998 on the English legal system.
  • Recognise and demonstrate an understanding of relevant legal concepts and principles.
  • Demonstrate the ability to read, analyse and apply a legal judgmentin relation to referencing
  • Effectively communicate research findings to a target audience (such as partners of a law firm and or a ‘client’)
