Protests may inconvenience people, but also fulfil a vital function in a democracy by providing citizens with an opportunity to register their views outside of elections.

This module examines the history and importance of the right to protest and the criminal, human rights, civil and public law that comprise protest law.

The law and how protests are policed are considered in their broadest context, and you will be encouraged to engage critically with contemporary issues of particular interest to them.

Module learning outcomes

• Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the fundamental doctrines, sources and principles that underpin Protest Law in England and Wales
• Demonstrate an ability to apply knowledge to complex situations and to recognise potential alternative conclusions and areas of ambiguity in the law
• Demonstrate critical knowledge and understanding of Protest Law in its broader socio-legal and political context
• Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of contemporary issues in Protest Law and an ability to communicate this to a non-specialist audience
