From the Essex girl to Kate Middleton. From celebrities’ private estates to living on a council estate. From hunger pains to the hunger for social mobility – we explore contemporary social issues in relation to class in the UK.

In this module, you will:

  • focus sociologically on the details of everyday life
  • explore how social class is lived and experienced in contemporary austerity Britain
  • reflect on your own social position using an auto-ethnographic perspective.

Module learning outcomes

  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of sociological perspectives on the sociology of social class
  • Explore debates and substantive issues pertaining to the sociology of social class
  • Make appropriate use of empirical data and theoretical work (and where possible and relevant, personal experiences), to produce coherent and detailed written work for an academic audience on a topic pertaining to the sociology of social class
