Clinical Investigation of Disease
Module code: C7165
Level 5
30 credits in spring semester
Teaching method: Lecture, Workshop, Practical, Pre lab, Post lab
Assessment modes: Coursework
This module introduces clinical investigation of disease. You will integrate theoretical knowledge with practical application, developing professional skills in the biomedical arena. This module includes a specific focus on clinical biochemistry and haematology.
This module includes a focus on clinical aspects of pathology, including biochemistry, microbiology, virology and haematology. You will learn the chemistry of the human body in health and disease through clinical case studies that investigate diagnosis, monitoring and treatment of selected pathologies using contemporary lab techniques.
You’ll develop your professional biomedical skills, including:
- quality assurance
- experimental design
- protocol development
- working in accordance with good laboratory practice
- teamwork
- problem solving
- analysis
- numeracy
- data processing
- data presentations.
Module learning outcomes
- Apply your understanding of disease mechanisms to investigate, gather, analyse and interpret data from clinical case studies.
- Demonstrate a critical understanding of disease pathology and clinical interpretation of cases from the areas of blood science, clinical biochemistry, virology and microbiology
- Explain normal haematopoiesis and show in-depth knowledge of haematological conditions such as anaemias, bleeding and coagulation disorders
- Apply knowledge of professional standards of practice including patient safety, quality control, delivery of high-quality care, data protection and collaborative team work and communication skills
