Mathematics
Differential Equations with Modelling
Module code: G5148
Level 5
15 credits in spring semester
Teaching method: Lecture
Assessment modes: Coursework, Unseen examination
This module builds on the Ordinary Differential Equations module, where you have first studied differential equations. You will learn where differential equations come from. You will also study further methods to solve ordinary differential equations and to understand their behaviour.
Finally, you will go onto partial differential equations, which have partial derivatives with respect to multiple variables. Youwill study first order partial differential equations (with first order partial derivatives) in this module only; higher order partial differential equations will be the topic of optional modules in Year 3.
Module learning outcomes
- Develop differential equation models for real-world applications;
- Analyse solutions of differential equations qualitatively;
- Use a variety of methods to solve differential equations analytically.
- Understand and employ the method of characteristics to solve first order partial differential equations
