Module code: G5144
Level 5
15 credits in autumn semester
Teaching method: Lecture
Assessment modes: Coursework, Unseen examination
Algebra gives you the tools to recognise when very different mathematical objects share the same underlying structure. Thanks to the concept of ‘group’, you will be able to treat in the same way the set of real numbers and the collection of symmetries of a Platonic solid.
You will also come to understand that there are situations where extremely useful properties, like being free to multiply numbers together in any order you like, are no longer true.
Module learning outcomes
- Use a range of established techniques in order to solve problems in classical group theory;
- Use a range of established techniques in order to solve problems in classical ring theory;
- Undertake further training in Algebra and develop existing skills from Number Theory.
