Mathematics
Fundamentals of Mathematics
Module code: G5133
Level 4
15 credits in autumn semester
Teaching method: Lecture
Assessment modes: Coursework, Unseen examination
Look at some of the most fundamental objects in mathematics upon which most mathematical theories rely for example sets, number systems, functions, groups. We will discuss how to define them rigorously and how they are related to each other.
You will also develop two important mathematical skills: logical reasoning and writing a mathematical proof.
Module learning outcomes
- Demonstrate an understanding of the axiomatic foundations of basic mathematical number systems, sets and functions;
- Understand and be able to employ the basic tools of mathematical logic and proof;
- Demonstrate a working knowledge of axiomatic arithmetic, group theory, fields and key relevant theorems.
