Mechanics and Heat
Module code: F3210
Level 4
15 credits in autumn semester
Teaching method: Workshop, Lecture
Assessment modes: Coursework, Unseen examination
In this module, you will study classical mechanics, as well as the laws of thermodynamics and macroscopic property of matter.
In mechanics, you’ll learn about concepts including:
- linear and rotational motion
- forces
- Newton’s laws
- momentum
- angular momentum and energy.
You’ll apply these concepts to settings such as Newtonian gravity and the harmonic oscillator.
You’ll learn about the laws of thermodynamics followed by macroscopic bodies, including concepts and phenomena such as pressure, internal energy and changes of state.
Module learning outcomes
- Demonstrate knowledge of classical mechanics, to include Newton’s laws, conservation laws including rotation, Newtonian gravitation to the level of Kepler’s laws, and ability to apply to physical problems
- Demonstrate knowledge of the laws of thermodynamics and bulk properties of matter, and ability to apply to physical problems
