Physics and astronomy
Galaxies and the Cosmos
Module code: F3305
Level 5
15 credits in spring semester
Teaching method: Class, Lecture
Assessment modes: Coursework, Unseen examination
On this module, you’ll get an overview of the properties of galaxies, their spatial distribution (large-scale structure) and the nature of the Universe as a whole (cosmology). This includes:
- galaxies: morphology and spatial distribution, and formation and evolution
- cosmology: observational evidence, the Big Bang and inflation, Friedmann equations and dark energy.
Module learning outcomes
- Have knowledge of and be able to critically evaluate the principal observational properties of galaxies.
- Explain how these observations inform our physical understanding of galaxies, groups/clusters of galaxies, and the Universe.
- Apply physical laws to make calculations that relate the observed properties of systems to their underlying physical properties.
- Have a broad understanding of the key cosmological and astrophysics process that give rise to galaxy formation and evolution.
