Mechanics

Module code: F3210
Level 4
15 credits in autumn semester
Teaching method: Lecture, Workshop
Assessment modes: Unseen examination, Coursework

In this module, you'll study classical mechanics.

In mechanics, you’ll learn about concepts including:

  • linear and rotational motion
  • forces
  • Newton’s laws
  • momentum
  • angular momentum and energy.

You’ll apply these concepts to settings such as Newtonian gravity and the harmonic oscillator.

Module learning outcomes

  • Demonstrate knowledge of classical mechanics, to include Newton’s laws, conservation laws including rotation, Newtonian gravitation to the level of Kepler’s laws, and ability to apply to physical problems
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the laws of thermodynamics and bulk properties of matter, and ability to apply to physical problems
