Foundation Mechanics

Module code: F3207
Level 3 (sub-degree)
15 credits in autumn semester
Teaching method: Class, Workshop, Lecture
Assessment modes: Unseen examination, Coursework

On this module, you’ll study key topics in mechanics, covering foundational principles and their applications. Areas of focus include:

  • units and dimensions
  • kinematics
  • dynamics
  • projectiles
  • momentum
  • energy, power and work
  • circular motion
  • collisions
  • forces
  • gravity.

Module learning outcomes

  • Have acquired a basic knowledge of kinematics and mechanics, including work, energy, power, momentum and statics and dynamics of rigid bodies.
  • Be able to solve problems relevant to physics and engineering at the appropriate level which requires use of the knowledge.
  • Have acquired a sufficient grounding in the material of the course for subsequent core courses in physics and engineering which include kinematics and mechanics.
