Chemistry
Synthetic Methods in Organic Chemistry
Module code: F1173
Level 6
15 credits in spring semester
Teaching method: Lecture, Workshop
Assessment modes: Coursework, Unseen examination
This module aims to familiarise you with the important modern methods used in industry and academia for the synthesis of carbon-carbon bonds in organic compounds.
You will gain a mechanistic understanding of the underlying chemistry for each method. Each case will be illustrated with examples taken from methods reported in the scientific literature.
By the end of the module you will be in a position to design a synthetic route to novel chemical structures. This will be assessed through a problem set and an unseen examination.
Module learning outcomes
- A systematic understanding of a wide range of synthetic methodologies for the construction of carbon-carbon bonds.
- Deploy knowledge of synthetic methods to devise a total synthesis of molecules.
- A systematic understanding of the mechanisms underlying synthetic methodologies.
