Chemistry
Green Chemistry and Organic Synthesis
Module code: F1401
Level 6
15 credits in autumn semester
Teaching method: Seminar, Lecture, Workshop
Assessment modes: Coursework, Unseen examination
Organic synthesis is vital to multiple industries, including the production of medicines, agrochemicals, cosmetics, plastics and all of the materials society needs. But carrying out synthesis at scale has the potential to produce risks to living organisms and cause irreversible damage to the environment.
You will explore how to transform organic synthesis using principles of green chemistry, developing more sustainable manufacturing processes for a modern world.
Module learning outcomes
- Understand the key principles of green chemistry and deploy them accurately and with ethical responsibility to organic transformations.
- Critically evaluate chemical processes to qualify and quantify their adherence to green chemistry principles.
- Devise solutions to problems in organic synthesis using emerging technologies to reduce the environmental impact of chemical processes.
- Demonstrate systematic understanding of reaction mechanism for green chemical processes.
