On this module, we’ll explore how anthropological and ethnographic knowledge may be applied beyond the academy. We’ll also consider how anthropological engagements in the world open new conceptual questions. The path followed will be recursive, tracing theory, knowledge and practice back and forth.

Topics covered will include:

• ethics of engaged/public anthropology
• anthropology with and without ‘textuality’
• queering anthropological knowledge
• from anthropology student to anthropologist in the world.

Module learning outcomes

• Demonstrate critical understanding of practices, methodologies and ethics of applied and engaged anthropology
• Demonstrate understanding of the relation between anthropological application and the generation of new theoretical perspectives
• Demonstrate critical knowledge of anthropological theory and practice in interdisciplinary contexts
• Utilise anthropological knowledge in respect of a range of ‘real world’ applications
• Engage creatively with anthropological theory and practice
