On this module, you’ll explore what anthropologists do, focusing on the practical, ethical and intellectual concerns of being an anthropologist. You’ll discuss how to conduct fieldwork and share research findings with diverse audiences.

The module starts with fieldwork and the core anthropological method of participant observation. It then moves on to examine written and visual forms of communicating ethnography, considering the impacts of engaged anthropology on the contemporary world.

Module learning outcomes

  • To demonstrate knowledge of core anthropological practices, such as fieldwork and the writing of ethnographies
  • To apply an understanding of ethnographic writing practices to the students' own written work
  • To identity and describe key areas in which anthropology has engaged with and had impact on issues in the contemporary world
  • To demonstrate a basic understanding of the relationship between knowledge, analysis and writing skills
