You will explore the politics of digital media culture, with a grounding in debates in feminist media studies to inform this.
Issues may include:
- misogyny and sexism in digital culture
- selfies, sexting and sexuality
- new feminist movements and fan cultures
- migration and mobiles.
The module engages debates about intersectionality, post feminism, heterosexuality, racism, violence and sexism across a range of media forms including mainstream mass media forms and alternative media production.
Module learning outcomes
- Systematically understand key challenges in feminism and digital culture
- Critically assess contemporary challenges in relation to a longer history of debates in feminist media studies
- Develop established techniques of inquiry to open up research questions
- Demonstrate an ability to critically analyse an appropriate example of media texts or practices
- Demonstrate an ability to critically evaluate literature in the field
- Demonstrate skills in written communication and research design
