This module looks at international film of the last five decades. A range of films will be studied in order to explore: genre and art cinema; post-colonialism and political cinema; gender and feminist cinema; and globalisation and popular cinema. We will study important movements in post-war film culture, including Third Cinema from Brazil and political cinema from Senegal. We will explore the relationship between gender, history, allegory and national cinema (examples may include films from Tunisia, Iran and Argentina). We will also examine the aesthetics and economics of the blockbuster in a global film culture (case studies may include contemporary films from South Korea, China, India and Australia).

Module learning outcomes

• An appropriate knowledge of the industrial and institutional contexts of significant developments in global film culture since the 1960s.
• An appropriate understanding of critical debates concerned with the representation of history, politics and gender in diverse national contexts.
• An appropriate understanding of critical debates concerned with the cultural and economic flows that characterise global film cultures.
• The ability to integrate critical sources in the analysis of film and show appropriate presentation skills in written work.
