Advances in Climate Sciences

Module code: F8513S
Level 6
30 credits in spring semester
Teaching method: Practical, Lecture
Assessment modes: Essay, Coursework

This module is an introduction to climate science with particular focus on:

  • climate feedbacks
  • climate observations
  • climate variability
  • climate analyses.

The module will highlight the major challenges in climate sciences (for example global carbon cycles and aerosols), and significant climate phenomena, such as El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO). You’ll gain hands-on experience in creating climate analysis and statistical plots using real-life data from climate observatories and outputs from existing climate models.

Module learning outcomes

  • Demonstrate a sound knowledge of the climate system.
  • Understand the cause of climate change and variability.
  • Understand the key elements of climate models and their predictions.
  • Summarise key debates and uncertainties in the climate change.
  • Identify research topics and develop independent research questions on the climate change.
  • Understand the approaches used in climate analyses and evaluations.
