In this module you will adopt a word with which you’ll practise a range of key concepts and skills for linguistic analysis, including sound, structure, meaning and history.
As well as giving you an introduction to linguistic research, you’ll explore the research and communication skills appropriate to academic writing and classroom interaction.
Module learning outcomes
- Identify and describe different levels of linguistic analysis.
- Analyse and describe words’ structures and meanings using appropriate linguistic terminology.
- Describe and classify English speech sounds and transcribe speech using the International Phonetic Alphabet.
- Apply linguistic concepts in the analysis of a single word.
- Apply linguistic tools (the IPA, dictionaries, corpora) appropriately in analysing a word
