This module involves linguistic analysis in one area of staff specialisation. The topic and reading list will be announced in the year prior.
It may include particular methodological or theoretical approaches, the study of language in a particular period or place or a particular aspect of language.
The changing nature of this module allows us to adapt quickly to changes in the field.
Module learning outcomes
- Apply up-to-date theoretical concepts in the analysis of linguistic data in a specialised area of inquiry.
- Choose and apply appropriately sophisticated tools of data collection/selection, data description, and data analysis.
- Analyse and explain linguistic (possibly including sociolinguistic or historical linguistic) phenomena clearly and accurately in appropriately academic language.
- Critically assess one’s own and others’ analyses, demonstrating logical thinking and sensitivity to the dynamism and subtleties of language and its use by speech communities.
