Module code: X3259
Level 5
15 credits in autumn semester
Teaching method: Seminar, Lecture
Assessment modes: Media

The overall aim of the module is to build knowledge of children and young people’s lives in the context of their family lives.  The module examines the concepts of ‘family’ and ‘family life’ – considering how we move from a ‘thing-like’ understanding of family to a conceptualisation that recognises the dynamic fluidity and diversity of family structures and family practices. The module covers topics including family diversity; heteronormativity; historical and international perspectives; siblings, fathers and mothers; and the contribution of social inequalities and understandings of disadvantage for policy and practice concerned with parents and families.
