On this module, you'll develop an understanding of wider perspectives in education, exploring why young people have been educated, how they've been educated, and what they have learnt across different time periods and perspectives.
You'll engage with questions such as:
- why do we educate and what is its purpose?
- what seminal theories of learning and education have shaped history?
- how has the purpose of education changed over time?
- how does the purpose of education differ across the globe?
You'll study the ideas of ancient and modern philosophers and educators, examining how the purpose of education influences classroom priorities, curriculum design, teaching methods,and assessment. By reflecting on these perspectives, you'll begin to articulate your own understanding of education's purpose.

- Demonstrate a developing theoretical knowledge and understanding of differing theories and approaches in the field of the History of Education.
- Evaluate literature and scholarship underpinning differing theories of education.
- Apply theoretical knowledge and understanding of differing theories of education from a number from different perspectives and viewpoints.
- Present, evaluate and interpret findings to develop a coherent argument effectively, clearly and fluently.
