Stuart Hall Foundation University of Sussex PGR Studentship (2025)

The University of Sussex is working in partnership with the Stuart Hall Foundation (SHF) to offer one funded studentship for the 2025-26 intake to Black British students to cover fees for up to 4 years. This may include one year of Master’s qualification for candidates who do not already hold a Master’s. Inspired by the life and work of Professor Stuart Hall, SHF works collaboratively to forge creative partnerships committed to public education and addressing urgent questions of race and inequality in culture and society.

What you get

Fees covered will include:

  • A maintenance allowance for 4 years at UKRI levels (currently at £19,237)
  • UK PhD fees for 4 years, or 1 year Masters + 3 years PhD fees
  • Up to £3000 in research and fieldwork costs

We are particularly interested in applicants whose research proposal focuses on areas of interest to Stuart Hall including Postcolonial and Diasporic Modernities; Cultural Studies; Race, Ethnicity and Visual Cultures; Radical Thinking on the Left; the production of the other in contemporary societies, e.g. through institutions such as citizenship, education, law, politics.

Eligible PhD applicants will already have completed a relevant Masters, or have relevant work experience, and successfully applied to study from October 2025 at the following Schools at Sussex:

  • Faculty of Media, Arts and Humanities
  • School of Global Studies
  • University of Sussex Business School
  • School of Law, Politics and Sociology
  • School of Education and Social Work

The recipient will benefit from working with the SHF to develop their career and research profile, forming a cohort of SHF PGRs at Sussex. They will enjoy privileged access to the work of the Foundation to be able to engage with and contribute to its resources and networks, including the annual gathering of Stuart Hall Foundation Scholars and Fellows. This is a positive action initiative under the Equality Act 2010. This studentship is available to start in October 2025.


Preference will be given to applicants from underrepresented or disadvantaged backgrounds, as
they would benefit from the Stuart Hall Foundation's Scholars and Fellows Network, which provides
access to resources and opportunities that aim to help members develop their career and research
profile.

This award is for:

  • New students starting in Autumn 2025
  • Candidates from a Black British background
  • Candidates who qualify for Home fees
  • Candidates whose proposed research clearly addresses social justice issues and can contribute to addressing barriers and discrimination facing marginalised groups

One funded studentship for the 2025-26 intake to Black, British students to cover fees for up to 4 years per studentship to join our cohort of Sussex Stuart Hall Foundation PGR scholars.

How to apply

First you must apply for a PhD place at Sussex on our online portal.  Then you can submit a Scholarship application (download from the document link at bottom of this page) written in a way that can be understood by a non–specialist to the Sussex Researcher School pgr-scholarships@sussex.ac.uk. Shortlisted candidates will be notified after the closing date.

Selection process
Successful candidates will have a strong academic background and/or evidence of prior experiential
learning relevant to research and/or the proposed study. All application forms will be reviewed by a
panel of Directors of Doctoral Study in the relevant schools to establish a shortlist.


Shortlisted candidates will be invited to attend an interview prior to a final shortlist being provided
to the Stuart Hall Foundation. The Stuart Hall Foundation will then make the final selection of the
successful applicant

  • Early December 2024: online workshop by SHF on how to development applications (tbc)
  • 16 December 2024: deadline for applying for a Sussex PhD place
  • 3 February 2025: 12 noon deadline for submitting the SHF funding application
  • Early March 2025: applications reviewed
  • Mid March 2025 : interviews
  • Beginning of April 2025: final shortlist agreed and shared with SHF
  • Mid-April 2025: successful candidate notified
