Postgraduate Researcher Mentees
Have you ever wished you could get 15 minutes with a senior colleague to ask their advice on how they would handle something? Or wondered how others approach challenging problems? This is your opportunity to ask.
Our mentors work across a variety of disciplines, in mid- to senior-level positions at Sussex. As a mentee, you will gain invaluable insight into how to navigate the crucial steps along your research journey.
Mentors will provide advice from their own experience, and may or may not be based in your disciplinary area. The focus is on career development more generally, and offering you different perspectives from outside your School bubble. We’ve deliberately recruited a diverse pool of mentors to cater to the diverse goals of PGRs.
Make the most of the session
In order to benefit fully, in advance of the session we will ask you to:
- Think about a problem, issue or challenge on which you would like input
- Identify any options you may be considering and think about the advantages and disadvantages of each
- Note down a one-minute description of yourself and stage of your research degree to provide context for mentors
Objectives
You will have the opportunity to:
- benefit from the experience and knowledge of academics working in a range of disciplines
- better understand what diverse career paths are available in academia
- make more informed career choices in further planning your professional goals
- identify the missing piece from your CV, or new routes for funding opportunities
- Expand your network and gain insight into the sector more broadly
For those not selected for this special mentoring session, Organisational Development (OD) offer other opportunities to engage, network with and learn from colleagues at Sussex. Visit the OD mentoring webpage for more information.
Registration
Registration for mentee is now extended until 12 noon, Monday 20 May.
As part of the application process, you will be asked to describe briefly what you hope to discuss with the mentors, and what you’d like to get out of the session. We will use your responses to these questions as a basis for participant selection.
