Three subject areas from the School of Media, Arts and Humanities have maintained top ten rankings in recent national league tables.
- American Studies has been placed 1st in the country in the Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2022, and 5th in the Guardian University Guide 2022
- Drama has been placed 7th in the country in the Complete University Guide 2022 (Drama, Dance and Cinematics)
- Art History has been placed 7th in the country in the Guardian University Guide 2022, and 8th in the Complete University Guide 2022 (History of Art, Architecture and Design).
Dr Ben Burbridge, Head of Art History said “We were very happy to learn that we've maintained a top ten position in the Guardian University League table, particularly when this is powered by very high levels of student satisfaction. This goes alongside our top ten position in the Complete University Guide, where we also currently rank number one in the country for Graduate Prospects.
“We do all we can to ensure that we deliver a unique, stimulating and supportive experience for all our Art History students. We don’t draw a distinction between academic learning and ‘employability’: our students want to make a difference and we do all we can to equip them with the skills they need to pursue rewarding careers through which they make meaningful contributions to the world”.
Dr Katharina Rietzler, Head of American Studies said “We've been teaching American Studies at Sussex since 1961; our department helped create this subject in the UK. Over the many years of change in the US since then, we've kept up with the politics, culture, and history, and we teach all of it, from colonial encounter to Trump and beyond.
“One element of our degree that we are particularly proud of is our Year Abroad Programme. With over 40 partner institutions in North America, we have the most extensive and best-quality year abroad of any American Studies degree in the UK. For most of our students, it’s a life-changing experience.”
Dr Augusto Corrieri, Admissions Tutor for Drama said 'We are thrilled that Sussex's BA Drama, Theatre and Performance continues to be recognised as being in the top 10 of the Complete University Guide. We are proud of the work we put into fostering a caring and tight-knit community of students and staff - an environment that allows for creative and critical exchange, in which our Drama students can develop as independent thinkers and theatre makers.'
Professor Kate O’Riordan, Dean of the School of Media, Arts and Humanities said “Many congratulations to the staff in American Studies, Art History and Drama for their great league table results. We’re really proud of all our accomplishments across the School, and these results reflect part of this picture of excellent teaching and student experience”.
