Disabled Narratives: From our Perspective
Thursday 10 April 12:00 until 17:00
University of Sussex Campus : Jane Attenborough Studio
Speaker: Matilda Barrowman

Have you ever wanted to know more about what life is like living with a specific disability? Are you fascinated by different discourses/art forms? Do you want to be proactive in creating a more accessible, diversity affirming world?
Matilda Barrowman, second year Creative Writing undergraduate student who is also a cerebral palsic, autistic wheelchair user, warmly invites you to her immersive exhibition. Featuring the insights of several disabled students, staff and alumni, through text, tactile artefacts (yes, these artefacts were made for you to feel), audio and visualmedia, this exhibition is guaranteed to challenge and disrupt your narrative of what it means to be disabled when it’s told from ‘the horse’s mouth.’
Disability is a natural occurrence in humanity, yet we have been (and still are in many cases) silenced, dehumanised and locked out of symposiums that are supposed to be about us. This event seeks to challenge misconceptions about our realities, from our colossal achievements/injustices to our quotidian interactions and navigations completely reframed from an array of perspectives. Above all, it seeks to celebrate the indispensable outlooks and contributions of disabled individuals in our society through reimagined methods, whilst simultaneously educating and prompting conversation about how we can take the visions of these disabled artists and apply to them to the rest of the world, starting with our own thinking to ‘deabilise’ the future!
