About the Artist:
Carole Bennett is a rural potter working in a small, traditional studio in East Sussex and presents an original and perceptive exploration of the types of porcelain that emerged along the Silk Road. Following on from early Chinese ceramic disciplines, porcelain is the sole material used in her studio. The porcelain is prepared, thrown on the wheel, fired and then glazed using ancient and modern firing techniques. Simple glazes are inspired by her studies and travels across Syria, Iran, China and the Arabian Gulf.
The pots are adorned with a wealth of medieval, modern and contemporary Arabic and Persian poetry from across the Middle East and these are carefully researched and painted onto the vessels by hand, using the same methods that have been used for centuries.
She has held two exhibitions – Porcelain and Pen (2016) in St James’s, London and Reflections of The Silk Road (2023) in the Brighton Pavilion, and her work was last year (2024) chosen to appear in the Royal Academy’s Summer Exhibition.
