Net zero battery development

This Higher Education Innovation Funding (HEIF) project is about the sustainable development of battery technology

Key project details

  • Title: Net zero battery development
  • Funder: Higher Education Innovation Fund (HEIF)
  • Duration: 2023
  • Amount: £50,000
  • Team: Prof Peter Fussey

Within the TFMRC, we are looking at achieving net zero CO2 emissions throughout product lifecycles. In this project, we are developing sustainable approaches to battery development by creating an off-grid battery development facility using solar energy and energy storage solutions.

We are looking to reduce CO2 emissions across the whole product development cycle. Prof Peter Fussey
Professor in Mechanical Engineering

The facility will be used for research into topics including:

  • Battery aging processes by cycling batteries ready for analysis with novel battery imaging techniques
  • Battery thermal management, developing new approaches for keeping batteries at the right temperature
  • Battery management systems, developing robust, optimised energy management strategies for automotive and aerospace applications
