Sex Diss Introduces: "Hot Topics"
Thursday 23 March 17:00 until 19:00
University of Sussex Campus : Hybrid: Silverstone SB 302 and Zoom: email samuel.solomon@sussex.ac.uk for link
Part of the series: This is the first "Hot Topics" event – it will be a series over the coming years...
In this space, we will carve out time every term (we are aiming for twice a term eventually, but will pilot the group this term with one session!) to gather and chat through urgent topics and questions for those of us thinking about gender and sexuality in a range of contexts in our work and in our lives. We hope this will create a space to work together through relevant current events and conversations as they unfold, using predominantly non-academic articles as prompts, giving us an opportunity for immediacy that the pacing of academic publishing does not usually afford!
Because we want the Hot Topics meetings to be as relevant as possible to the interests of our community, we are hoping to pick the discussion topics only about a week in advance of each session. We’d then love for the group to reflect the interests of as many attendees as possible, so whenever we announce a date for a meeting, we will also give contact details to reach out to us with ideas of what current questions or events you’d like to discuss, and we will try and select readings and discussion prompts that reflect a range of your ideas.
Topic: The implications of bans on Drag
At the first meeting of Hot Topics!, we will be discussing the rise in far right organizing against drag performances, in the context of a broader set of homophobic and transphobic legislation emerging from and escalating in the US and in the UK at present. No reading is required to attend and take part in the discussion, but our suggested readings are:
Read Drag Queens Are the Latest Target for Homophobic Culture Warriors
And a useful resource for tracking the rise in such legislation is via the Transgender Law Center's National Equality Map - view it now.
In this and every session of Hot Topics!, homophobia, transphobia, sexism, racism, ableism, and classism will not be tolerated.

We look forward to seeing you there soon, and to being in regular conversation together about pressing and important Hot Topics relevant to the Sex Diss community!
This will be a hybrid meeting. For the Zoom link, please write to samuel.solomon@sussex.ac.uk for the link
