Congratulations to 2024 Nobel Prize winners Demis Hassabis (Google Deep Mind) and Daron Acemoglu (MIT) who have won this year’s prizes in Chemistry and Economics.
In 2022, Professor Felix Creutzig of the Bennett Institute for Innovation and Policy Acceleration, based at the Business School, co-authored two significant papers in Artificial Intelligence with these Nobel laureates.
Professor Felix Creutzig and Daron Acemoglu studied how digital technology affects our planet. They found that these technologies have often made environmental problems worse, both locally and globally. Their research looked at how digital technology has impacted the environment in the past, how it is affecting it now, and what it might do in the future, focusing on three key areas that are all connected.
Professor Creutzig and Demis Hassabis worked together to explore how machine learning can help fight climate change. They found that machine learning can be a powerful tool for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and helping society adapt to a changing climate. Their research highlighted several important areas, like smart grids and disaster management, where machine learning can make a significant difference by working alongside other fields.
