Biography

Dr. Mohammad Shamsudduha ("Shams") joined the University of Sussex as a Lecturer in Physical Geography in August 2019 to teach and conduct research in the area of ‘water and development’. Shams is a geoscientist by academic training and educational background. Shams has a PhD in Hydrogeology from University College London (UCL) that followed three MSc degrees in Geology, Hydrogeology and Groundwater Management from three continents (Asia, Australia, and North America). Shams' global experience in terrestrial hydrology and groundwater resources is supported by an expertise and a range of highly transferable skills in statistics and geostatistics, hydroinformatics, geospatial Big Data analytics, Geographical Information System (GIS) and remote sensing, use of Earth Observation satellites, hydrological modelling, and field experimentation. Before joining the Department of Geography at the University of Sussex (UoS), Shams spent 12 years at UCL – first as a doctoral researcher (2007–2011) and then a postdoctoral research fellow (2012–2019) working at the UCL Institute for Risk and Disaster Reduction (IRDR). Shams has been serving as the Project Manager on a UK-government funded (NERC-ESRC-DFID, 2015–2020) consortium research, “Groundwater Futures in Sub-Saharan Africa (GroFutures)” under the programme “Unlocking the Potential of Groundwater for the Poor (UPGro)”.

Dr. Mohammad Shamsudduha ("Shams") is currently serving as an Associate Editor for the Hydrogeology Journal. Shams has been a member of the International Association of Hydrogeologist (IAH) since 2004, the American Geophysical Union (AGU) since 2005 and the Geological Society of America (GSA) since 2005. Shams previously served on the editorial board of the Climate Risk Management journal between 2015 and 2018.
