The University of Sussex has come joint first for Sustainable Food in the country. In the latest People & Planet’s 2022/23 University League table, Sussex managed to attain full marks in the Sustainable Food section. The annual list is compiled of 153 universities across the UK and ranks them in various categories, based on their environmental systems.
Sussex Food managed to score an impressive 100% when it came to our sustainability practices. People & Planet measure this section using four subcategories, food policy, tender specifications, community food and food accreditation.
Sussex Food have held a 3-star rating (the highest mark possible) from the Sustainable Restaurant Association since 2019, last being renewed in January 2022.
We are the only University in the country with an onsite Aerobic Digester, which converts any food and compostable container waste produced onsite into biomass that is then used as fertiliser on the University grounds. All our takeaway containers are compostable, and we encourage reusable coffee cups through a 20p disposable charge. We use local Brighton suppliers for all our food deliveries and are partnered with food waste schemes such as Too Good To Go, as well as Olio, who help us distribute any excess food across to Brighton food banks.
We are proud to be recognised by such an esteemed network for all the hard work we do here on campus and are keen to keep adapting and improving when it comes to our food sustainability practices for the future.
