This programme – deliberately avoiding the customary church view of Lent - features, however, a spiritual element… including Langlais’ quite stunning Fifth Trumpet – which
concerns the terrible calamities described in Chapter 9 of the Book of Revelations: trumpet blasts, stars falling from the sky, the Abyss – and smoke arising from it, the plague of locusts and scorpions tormenting suffering on mankind… But – after the fearful Apocalypse – there is the promise of true peace – so Howells’ prelude on “But the meek spirited shall possess the earth and shall be refreshed in the multitude of peace.” Ps. 37 v.11 – in which I will be doing as much conjuring as possible registrationally. The programme ends with Noel Tredinnick’s refreshing ‘Brief Encounters – a piece he wrote in 1976 in great admiration of George Thalben-Ball.
