Professor David Edmunds
David Edmunds is a distinguished researcher and professor of mathematics. He gained a first-class honours degree in mathematics from Cardiff in 1952 and stayed there to complete his PhD.
After university, he joined EMI Electronics as a research mathematician. Two years was enough to convince David that his future lay within academia, where he would have greater freedom to set his own challenges rather than have them imposed by external forces.
He went back to Cardiff to take up a lectureship. In the mid-1960s, David joined the University of Sussex as Senior Lecturer and has remained there to undertake a number of professorial roles – he is now a Professor Emeritus.
He played a significant part in making Sussex the leading UK centre for work in partial differential equations.
David has undertaken a number of visiting professorships at universities in Canada, Italy, the Czech Republic and in the US. His international awards include the Pólya Prize of the London Mathematical Society and the Bolzano Medal of the Czech Academy of Sciences; he is a Fellow of the Learned Society of Wales and a Foreign Member of the Georgian Academy of Sciences.
His research output includes eight books and more than 200 research papers. Under his direction, 18 students have gained a PhD.
