Workplace Adjustment Toolkit

Learn more about workplace adjustments and the support on offer for staff and line managers.

Our vision is to become Inclusive Sussex, where all members of our community have equal access to opportunities, experience the University as one that enables them to fully meet their potential, and supports them to make a full contribution to university life. We support you by ensuring how, when and where you work provides the right balance for you, while also meeting the business need of the University.

This toolkit provides guidance on workplace adjustments, how to arrange, implement, change and review them and signposts staff and managers to sources of information and guidance.

Effective workplace adjustments remove barriers to enable staff to fulfil their potential and benefits the University. Managers should work proactively and collaboratively with staff to put in place workplace adjustments.

As an employer, we have a duty under the Equality Act 2010 to make reasonable adjustments where a disabled member of staff (or job applicant) is put at a substantial disadvantage compared to others, by the application of a “provision, criteria or practice”. The Public Sector Equality Duty requires public authorities, in the exercise of their functions, to have due regard to the need to eliminate discrimination, advance equality of opportunity and foster good relations between different people when carrying out their activities.

This toolkit uses the terms ’workplace adjustment’ and ‘reasonable adjustment’: they both refer to the same process.
