Accreditation of Engineering & Design courses

Accrediting Bodies for our Engineering courses are:

Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE)

Institution of Engineering & Technology (IET)

Our courses have been assessed as meeting externally designated standards and quality thresholds that are recognised by the sector’s industry and employers and the learning and achievement of graduates meet the professional benchmarks and standards set by the accrediting body.

Successful completion of an accredited BEng course ensures that you fully meet the academic requirement for registration as an Incorporated Engineer (IEng) and that you partially meet the academic requirement for registration as a Chartered Engineer, (CEng).

In order to fully meet the academic requirements for registration as a Chartered Engineer you need either; a Bachelors degree, with Honours, in engineering or technology, accredited for CEng, plus an appropriate and accredited Masters degree or; an accredited integrated Masters (MEng) degree

Our Product Design BSc courses are accredited by the Institution of Engineering Designers (IED) and successful completion ensures membership of the IED upon graduation.

Joining a professional institution as an affiliate member

Students are encouraged to become affiliate members of one of our accrediting professional bodies, the IMechE, the IET or the IED. Membership is free (or sponsored by the department) and brings benefits such as free training support and library resources, attendance to technical talks, as well as the opportunity to participate in the younger members committees activities.

Students can join these institutions whenever they wish, but we organise annual, introductory presentations when new or existing students can join. These presentations are timetabled so look in Sussex Direct. The membership to the IMechE is free while the Department sponsors 50 IET student memberships per annum, given in preference to EEE BEng/MEng students with any remaining provided to Mechanical (with Robotics) and Automotive BEng/MEng and Product Design BSc students on a first come first served basis. The Department is an IET Academic Partner which, amongst other benefits, affords us access to a wide range of industrial speakers who we invite to the Department to give talks to undergraduate students on all our degree programmes.
