Caring for Transnational Migrant Women within an HIV Diaspora

CORTH Research Seminar

Ulla McKnight (Research fellow, Sociology, School of Law, Politics and Sociology)

Wednesday 20 May 12:00 until 13:00

Dr McKnight presented her research on care in an acute NHS HIV specialist antenatal clinic in London that caters mainly to transnational migrant women. The research examines how these women are threatened by the effects of an HIV diaspora. Dr McKnight argues that the patient’s diasporic positionality cuts across place and time. Therefore, their lack of access to care is not an event that remains in the past, but it (re)materialises constantly within the clinic. We had an excellent Q&A session discussing the concept of the diaspora in relation to health conditions and how UK immigration status effects migrant women’s access to HIV health care.
