Born in Halle, Germany, in 1874, Martha Bernstein-Neuhaus studied art in Munich in the 1890s and, from 1909 to 1912, attended the Académie Matisse in Paris. In 1921 she published Die Schönheit der Farbe in der Kunst und im täglichen Leben, which was translated into English and published in 1928 under the title Colour in Art and Daily Life (London, Methuen & Co).
