On June 3 2009 the Research Centre in Memory, Narrative and Histories, University of Brighton and the Centre for Life History and Life Writing Research, University of Sussex collaborated on what we hope will be the first of a series of post graduate research events. The aim of this research day was to enable post-graduate students from the Universities of Brighton and Sussex to meet in a creative environment to present on aspects of their work that relate to memories, narratives and histories. These included:
- Life history and oral history work
- Archival research and reflections on the nature of archives
- Public history
- Cultural memory
- Community history
- Creative / Life writing, cultural practice and life story
Over 30 students from both the Universities of Brighton and Sussex, together will students from further afield, took part in the research day, presenting 20 minute papers on aspects of their work which ranged from analysis of trauma and memory in the work of the novelist Kazuo Ishiguro (Teo), to discussion of the 'One Day for Life' photographic collection in the Mass-Observation Archive (Pollen) through to commemorative practices in vanished landscapes (Kealy Morris). Alongside these research papers, participants created posters outlining their field of research which could be viewed by everyone who attended the research day.
