The Centre for Colonial and Postcolonial Studies has a long-standing history at the University of Sussex and reflects significant interdisciplinary and cross-school interests. Colleagues involved in the Centre work on the histories and cultures of colonialism, in postcolonial studies, including the literature of terror and trauma, and on the politics of knowledge production inherent in colonial and imperial endeavours.
The Centre's remit includes:
- acting as the forum for discussion of themes associated with the Centre, including of work in progress among its members
- providing an intellectual 'home' for research students with interests in these themes across the Arts and Humanities and Social Sciences
- hosting occasional international conferences and symposia
- raising the profile of research at Sussex outside of the university
At the core of these activities is a series of informal discussions of work in progress by the centre's members. Anyone interested is welcome to attend, register as an affiliate of the centre and join in an open consultation about its activities.
The Director of the Centre for Colonial and Postcolonial Studies is Prof Gurminder K Bhambra (International Relations).
The Steering Committee of CCPS for academic year 2019-20 consists of: Louiza Odysseos (IR), Alison Phipps (Sociology), Razan Ghazzawi (MFM), Johanna Skurnik (Geography), Paul Gilbert (ID) and Ali Kassem (LPS).
