Annemie Maertens is senior lecturer in Economics. She uses the tools of social and behavioural economics to understand poverty dynamics in rural settings in Asia and Sub Saharan Africa. She has done field research in South and West India on the social and behavioural determinants of households investment behaviour. In particular, she looked at how farmers learn from each other when a new agricultural technology is introduced, and at how marriage-related social norms affect investment in girls' education. She is currently working on a secondary-data project on the role of rural to urban migration on changes in land market in rural India.
