The University of Sussex has risen up newly published global rankings in six academic subjects.

The Geography department has risen into the top 75 globally and Psychology has moved into the top 100, according to the newly published Shanghai Ranking.

The University has also seen its’ global ranking improve in Ecology, Environmental Science and Engineering, Business Administration and Public Administration.

The Shanghai Ranking, also known as the Academic Ranking of World Universities or ARWU Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS) 2020, assessed more than 4,000 universities in this year’s edition.

The ranking is focused almost entirely on publications (of articles only – but including a measure for international collaborations) and citations, with significant awards to members of staff (such as the Nobel Prize, Fields Medal etc.) being included for certain disciplines.

More than 10,000 professors from top 100 universities in the world were surveyed and asked to list the top tier journals in their primary subjects and to identify the most influential and credible international awards in their primary subjects.

Universities are ranked in 54 subjects across Natural Sciences, Engineering, Life Sciences, Medical Sciences, and Social Sciences. This year the University is ranked in 21 subjects.
