Superstar kickboxer and MPAS student James Meekin has been all over the world competing recently, and he's definitely done us proud!
Only 5 months into the year and James has already become British Champion in 2 different weight categories, won numerous open and grand slam events across Europe and even made a spectacular debut in the world of MMA.
His acheivements so far have qualified him for the Senior European Championships in Athens later this year, and he is also in preparations for the EUSA University games.
James has said his aim is to finish on the podium in Athens, as this will qualify him to compete at the World Games next year in China. This definitely appears to be within James' reach so we will be eagerly watching this space!
James had this to say about his experience as a sport scholar: "I wasn’t expecting any support from the university as kickboxing wasn’t even a sport England recognised sport when I came to Sussex and the help I’ve had has allowed me to pursue my dreams in this sport. I’m now in a position to achieve things I didn’t even really think possible only a few years ago."
James receives financial support as part of the sports scholarship scheme which is supported by Sussex Fund, thanks to generous donations from alumni and friends of the University.
