Pienaar Lab

Research in the Pienaar lab focuses on the mechanisms underlying neurodegeneration in neurodegenerative diseases affecting older adults (Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease and Dementia with Lewy bodies). Such diseases are hallmarked by the relentless death of neurons in specific regions of the brain, and the accumulation of protein aggregates within surviving neurons. For this we make use of a large range of lab techniques, applied to rodent and cellular models of neurodegenerative disease, as well as human post-mortem brain tissue. In particular, work in the lab follows a 'single-cell' approach, to understand the relative contribution made by a specific cell-type towards disease pathology. We then turn this knowledge to our advantage to design novel and improve existing therapeutics for treating this group of devastating disorders.

We always welcome correspondence to enquire after post-graduate studies or for potential collaborations with established research group leaders or Research Fellows, so feel free to get in touch with the Head of Group, Dr. Ilse Pienaar.
