Look into my eyes!

Alhazen

When did Visual Neuroscience begin as a discipline?  A good case could be made for it's origins lying with Ibn al-Haytham (Alhazen), a polymath who worked in Cairo 1000 years ago.  To the left is his drawing of the visual pathways and to the right the structure of the eye. In his Kitab al-Manazir (Book of Optics) he described how light travels in a straight line, the principle of the pin-hole camera, reflection and refraction, lenses and mirrors, binocular vision, the decomposition of white light into different colours, the height of the atmosphere......You can find out more about him here.
