Student Mentors

Academic Student Mentors needed for Life Sciences 24/25

Academic Student Mentors are 2nd, 3rd and 4th year students employed by the School of Life Sciences to provide academic help to students in their cohort, mainly Foundation, 1st year and 2nd year students.

This role provides students with valuable work experience, and an opportunity to develop various useful vocational skills including communication, teamwork, organisation, and time management. These skills are valuable to employers and can put students ahead when it comes to applying for jobs after graduation.

Student Mentors, on request, can be provided a reference to be used in job applications.

How does it work?

Successful candidates will have opportunity to have training in the summer via the Academic Skills Consultant and then will be invited to a meeting with the Director of Student Experience, Dr Qiao Chen and Student Experience Team to plan the student mentor sessions.

The Student Mentor Scheme has been reviewed for 2024-25 and students will be paid for 1-1 sessions booked with students (up to 2 hours per week). These will be hosted and managed by the Student Mentors and can be online or in person. They will need to keep a record of mentoring events or academic concerns and they will need to feed back to the Director of Student Experience and Student Experience Coordinator.

This is a paid position, hourly on submission with a timesheet on Reed (with a pay rate currently at £12.19 per hour). All mentors must have completed mandatory training (which is paid for) before starting any mentoring sessions.

These are the dates you will be working within:

23rd September- 6th December 2024
27th January- 11th April 2025
