Collection Description

Contains papers of the Proposed University College for Sussex Committee. The autograph, typescript, and printed papers, circular letters, correspondence, memoranda, minute books, pamphlets, and parliamentary papers relate to early attempts to found a university college in Brighton. They cover the period 1905 - 1962, especially 1911 - 1912.

Most of the papers in the collection were presented to the University Library in December 1960 by Mr. Bentham Stevens, one of the joint organising secretaries of the original promotion committee.

The Parliamentary papers relating to the University of Sussex Bill, 1962, were presented by Lady Reading, Swanborough Manor, Swanborough, Sussex, in June 1962.

The minute books and correspondence relating to the 1920s and 1930s were in the possession of T.M.Eggar, a local solicitor concerned with the original scheme, and presented to the University in August 1973 by his business successor, G.M.Coltart of Fitzhugh, Eggar & partners, Brighton.
