The Fire Engine, 1965/6: Bob Harvey, member of the Student Union Committee when Lorne Duncan was president, decided it would be a good idea to buy 1440 pakets of Lyons tea in order to win this in a competition. "I then went away for the summer and left everyone else with the unenviable task of selling the tea [sold on to Brighton landladies] and completing the entry forms. Next term we won and went to London to collect our prize, which was driven down from London to Brighton with half a dozen of us riding on the back. Unfortunately, the company who had supplied the prize had not refilled the engine oil, so we ground to a halt half-way down the A23. We were never able to fulfil our original idea of adapting the vehicle for children's rides, but we had come up with that idea to complete the sentence "I want to own a fire engine because....." to improve our chances of winning." It seems the 1930's Dennis did, however, end its days in a children's playground after the engine finally gave out. (Thanks to Bob Harvey and Chris Boyne for the background to this.) |
