Biography

Rorden Wilkinson is Professor of Global Political Economy and Deputy Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Education and Innovation, and a fellow of the UK Trade Policy Observatory.  He was previously Chair of the Department of International Relations and Deputy Head of the School of Global Studies.  Before joining Sussex in 2014 he was Professor of International Political Economy and Research Director of the Brooks World Poverty Institute at the University of Manchester, where he was based for 17 years.  He has held visiting positions at, among other institutions, the Watson Institute at Brown University, the Department of Political Science at Wellesley College, and the College of Asia and the Pacific at the Australian National University.  
 
He is an international political economist specialising in international trade (especially the World Trade Organization), global governance, development, 'emerging' powers, least developed countries and small island states.  His most recent books include (with Thomas G. Weiss) Rethinking Global Governance (Polity, 2019), (edited with Thomas G. Weiss) International Organization and Global Governance (Routledge, second edition 2018) and (edited with Synne L. Dyvik and Jan Selby) What's the Point of International Relations? (Routledge, 2017).  He co-edits, with Thomas G. Weiss, the Global Institutions series for Routledge.
 
He has served as a Vice President of the International Studies Association.  He is a member of the editorial board of the international public policy journal Global Governancea Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences and of the Royal Society of Arts, and the 2014 recipient of the International Studies Association Society for Women in International Political Economy (SWIPE) Mentoring Award.  He was awarded the Johan Skytte International Manuscript Workshop Award for his 2014 book What’s Wrong with the WTO and How to Fix It.  He serves and has served as an expert member on a number of high-level panels including the Commonwealth Consultative Committee Expert Group on Trade, the Least Developed Countries IV Istanbul Programme of Action Monitor, and the World Economic Forum (WEF)/International Centre for Trade and Sustainable Development (ICTSD) E15 Initiative.
