Role

I have worked for the University of Sussex since December 2009. I am responsible for managing and overseeing communications colleagues and activities for the three Schools that make up the Faculty of Social Sciences:

  • Education and Social Work (ESW)
  • Global Studies
  • Law, Politics & Sociology (LPS)

My primary areas of responsibility include the websites for those Schools (internal and external), promotional materials, social media channels, signage/visuals/branding, the ways in which we communicate directly with our students and colleagues, and working with Marketing and Admissions colleagues to support student recruitment in various ways.

I am looking at, and updating, our policies and procedures to ensure that what we do is right for our current - and future - students and colleagues.

I have always worked in media and communications, starting out in local newspaper and radio and moving on to the BBC for whom I worked in various areas including Y2k Business Continuity and Broadcast Online.

I went on to take on the role of Communications Manager: International Press & Publicity for FremantleMedia - part of RTL Group working on programming such as World Idol and international productions of the award-winning Idols format including American Idol, also Neighbours, The X Factor, several Jamie Oliver series, The Apprentice and The Swan. I also undertook personal publicity for visiting cast including arranging and staging press photocalls; nurturing relationships with journalists; researching and writing press releases for issue to international trade press. I was also responsible for Corporate PR providing primarily trade press with information and pictures to support features; preparing press releases and statements to support and communicate company strategy; monitoring and disseminating press coverage; liaison with FM press offices and PR agencies worldwide and with international broadcasters regarding publicity for FM productions.
